Wells dismissed after ‘harsh second yellow’

Match-winner: Lambe scored for Mansfield

Nahki Wells, the Huddersfield Town striker, had an afternoon to forget after receiving the first red card of his career after two bookable offences against Millwall at the Den on Saturday.

Wells appeared fired up from the start of the Sky Bet Championship game, committing a foul within the first minute of the game before becoming embroiled in a running battle with Shaun Williams, the Millwall defender.

Williams received a yellow card for a foul on Wells on the half-hour mark before the Bermuda striker was booked for pushing an opposing player. Wells, who was spoken to by the referee in first-half stoppage time, was shown his second yellow card after an aerial duel with Williams on 51 minutes with score at 1-1.

The 24-year-old apologised to Huddersfield supporters via Twitter. “Massive three points for us today. Apologise to the lads, the club and the fans today. It was never a second yellow.”

Huddersfield overcame Wells’s sending off to defeat Millwall 3-1. Sean Scannell’s neat finish had put the visiting side ahead on 17 minutes, but Stefan Maierhofer cancelled it out before half-time.

Jacob Butterfield gave Huddersfield the lead again from long range on 74 minutes, and a late penalty from James Vaughan, which Wells would have taken had he been on the pitch, sealed the three points for Chris Powell’s side. Wells will now miss Huddersfield’s home match against Wolverhampton Wanderers tomorrow.

Powell agreed that Wells’s second yellow was a harsh decision.

“I thought Nahki’s second yellow was incredibly harsh and it’s a big shame we’ll be without him on Tuesday and Wolves,” he said.

At the same time as Wells was being sent off, Reggie Lambe, his Bermuda team-mate, was scoring for relegation-threatened Mansfield Town against Stevenage in the 51st minute in League Two.

Lambe came on as a substitute in the 46th minute, rifling in a back-post volley to hand Mansfield a first win in seven matches, dragging the team out of the relegation zone and into twentieth position. Mansfield take on Morecambe tomorrow.
