Duffy triumphs in Cape Town

Winning feeling: Duffy celebrates on the podium with Dance, left, and Kuramoto

Flora Duffy won in Cape Town today to maintain her perfect start to the season.

Duffy’s victory in the African Cup Triathlon was her second in eight days, coming on the back of her Xterra Albay win in the Philippines.

The Bermuda triathlete finished the sprint-distance race in a time of 1hr, 8min, 49sec, just ahead of Lauren Dance, of South Africa, who finished in 1:09:23, while Aoi Kuramoto, of Japan, was a close third in 1:09:31.

All three came out of the water in ten minutes, and there was little to separate the top eight after the 20K bike section, which Duffy completed in 35:51. It was on foot that Duffy finally broke away from the pack, finishing the 5K run in a time of 21:52, with the rest failing to break 22 minutes.

Duffy will be in action again on Sunday when she defends her Xterra South African Championship title in Grabouw, Western Cape. Her win in last year’s event kick-started a season in which she won the Xterra World Championship in Hawaii.
