Onions can survive, says Ward

Spot on: Russell scored for Hood

Robin Hood 1

Flanagan’s Onions 1

Mick Ward, the Flanagan’s Onions coach, remains confident that his side can stave off relegation but admitted that “games were running out” for the Premier Division basement dwellers.

Onions had to settle for a share of spoils in last night’s game at Goose Gosling Field, leaving them two points behind third-from-bottom Devonshire Cougars who play their game in hand against Dandy Town at Goose Gosling Field tonight.

Ward believed his side had “thrown away” two points against Hood, having taken an early lead through a bullet header from defender Martel Laws, before being pegged back in the second half after conceding a sloppy penalty dispatched by Antwan Russell, the Hood striker.

“We’re obviously disappointed, we were a goal up, but conceded a very silly goal that cost us two points,” Ward said.

“It’s disappointing to have only picked up a point, I thought we deserved all three, but it’s probably a good point.

“We’re still confident that we can [stay up] and if we keep picking up points then we’ll be OK.

“Games are running out for us, but they’re running out for everybody.”

Onions, who have scored and conceded the most goals in the top flight, notched their 27th league goal of the season on 15 minutes when Laws powered home a close-range header from a free kick.

A typically physical and competitive affair between these two sides, Onions were enjoying the superior possession but were unable to double their advantage, with Brian Amaro going closest with a shot that was well blocked by Grant McKellar.

The closest Hood went to troubling Stephen Gould, the Onions goalkeeper, was when Lejuan Simmons — who has taken a break from a stint in the UK at non-League Ilkeston to try and force his way into Bermuda’s World Cup qualifying squad — dragged an effort wide.

Hood improved after the break and found an equaliser when Laws turned from hero to villain after his poor clearance fell invitingly to Russell who drove into the box before being tripped by makeshift defender Kevin Ronaldson.

Russell, who is expected to be named in Bermuda’s World Cup qualifying squad, made no mistake from the spot on 65 minutes, with Ward responding by bringing on Keston Lewis, his team’s talismanic striker.

It was Hood, however, who went the closest to finding the winner when Simmons forced a smart save from Gould from a tight angle late on.

Onions return to league action on Sunday against PHC Zebras at Goose Gosling Field.
