Smith ready for Norwegian challenge

On the move: striker Smith

Jonté Smith, the Bermuda striker, has completed a move from Finland’s Kemi Kings to Norway’s Floy IL.

Smith, who helped Kings gain promotion to the second tier of Finnish football last season and topped the club’s and Kakkonen North League’s scoring charts with 22 goals, put pen to paper on an undisclosed deal with his new club who play in Norway’s second tier.

Smith’s prolific form last season attracted interest from Floy IL, who swooped for the Bermuda striker who has made himself available for the Island’s World Cup qualifying first-round tie against Bahamas next month.

“They approached Kemi Kings to try and agree a transfer for me,” Smith, one of 19 players that were invited to participate in last month’s four-day Major League Soccer Caribbean Combine in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, said. “Obviously I was very comfortable at Kemi. I was settled, but it’s a good opportunity to play, progress and better my development.”

Smith’s said that he has quickly settled in his new surroundings.

“The transition moving to this club has been pretty smooth,” Smith said. “I’ve settled in quickly and they’ve looked after me well since I’ve been here. I’m happy to have signed for this club.”

Smith impressed in a pre-season friendly this week, scoring and assisting in two goals in a 4-1 victory.

“I enjoyed my first friendly game,” the 20-year old said. “I am still working on increasing my fitness, but I have a decent amount of time left before the season starts.”

The start of the domestic season in Norway will not clash with Smith’s involvement in Bermuda’s World Cup qualifiers with Bahamas next month.

“The season starts in the beginning of April and it doesn’t effect my availability for the World Cup qualifiers, if I am selected,” he said.

Smith, the son of former Bermuda cricket team captain Clay Smith, initially joined Kings on loan from Crawley Town, of the Sky Bet League One, last March.
