Medical supplies firm off to strong start

Meeting a need: US physician Mike Serebrennik and business partner Yana Swainson of Lighthouse Medical Supplies, a new business aimed at making life easier for the elderly and housebound with health problems

A new company is offering an online home delivery service for specialised medical supplies.

Lighthouse Medical Supplies — which started operations at the turn of the year — has already signed up around 100 clients for its range of products.

Founder and CEO Yana Swainson, a certified nurses’ aide who also runs Bermuda In-Home Care for the elderly and housebound, got the idea after talking to clients and their families.

She said her new venture, set up with partner Mike Serebrennik, a US physician, provided a range of incontinence-related supplies.

Ms Swainson added: “A lot of my clients use these products constantly — I contacted manufacturers and they sent me samples and I got the clients to test them and picked the best ones.

“We extensively test our products to ensure seniors are getting the best value for their money and that they are getting products that do what they’re supposed to do.”

The wide range of supplies can be ordered through Lighthouse’s website — and if orders are placed by 3.30pm, they can be delivered the same day.

Ms Swainson said: “I was concerned because people said that seniors weren’t online — but they’re happy with it. A lot of people depended on relatives to go to the store for them.”

She added the firm could also take phone orders and anyone uneasy about using a credit or debit card online could opt to pay for their supplies in cash or by cheque on delivery — which is free.

And Ms Swainson said all products are delivered in plain packaging because “it’s important to protect people’s privacy”.

She added that an online business cut the need to rent premises and cut overheads — leading to a better deal for clients.

Ms Swainson said: “We’re the only ones who are doing this online at the moment.”

But she added that the firm’s products were also available at Somerset Pharmacy and Lindo’s Supermarket in Devonshire, with other locations expected to be available soon.

Ms Swainson said: “We have our own delivery system and we have a company that will deliver to places like nursing homes as well. We try to turn around orders within 24 hours.” The firm runs scheduled deliveries in the central and eastern areas from Mondays to Fridays, and in the west on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

But Ms Swainson said: “If we’re in a particular area and we get a call by 3.30pm, we can deliver that day.”
