A civil case against Kevin Brown, the son of former Premier Dr Ewart Brown, has begun in California.

Kevin Brown, 44, was convicted in 2011 of 21 charges related to a string of sexual assaults on patients at the Crenshaw Expo Medical Centre, including an undercover officer and a 15-year-old girl. He was subsequently sentenced to 12½ years behind bars.

During his initial trial, Deputy District Attorney Ann Marie Wise called Brown’s office as “his personal playground” where anyone who entered became “his prey”. Brown lost his licence to practise medicine and is still in prison.

The matter returned to court this week as one of Brown’s former patients, a professional model, launched a civil complaint against both Brown and the clinic, alleging that he used his position to sexually abuse her when she sought help for medical issues.

According to the City News Service, the complainant’s lawyer, Brian Dunn, told the civil jury at the Los Angeles Superior Court that she was inappropriately touched during several visits between August 2007 and April 2008.

He said that she first went to the clinic because it was close to her workplace. While a chaperone was present during her first visit, Mr Dunn said she became uneasy because of the way Brown was staring at her.

She returned to the clinic seven months later to treat an ear injury and there were no further problems with the defendant’s conduct, but when she came back the next month he displayed more questionable behaviour.

Mr Dunn said that while they were in the examination room, Brown pulled off his client’s shirt and lifted her bra to examine her breathing. He said that physicians are supposed to allow patients to remove their own clothing and wear gowns while being examined.

“At this point [the complainant] knew something was wrong,” he said. “She stormed out of there and never went back.”

Lawyer Don Fesler, representing both Brown and the centre, said the complainant made her last visit to the clinic to get a medical excuse for time off so that she could audition for reality show Flavour of Love.

He also said Brown was a board-certified physician who studied at Howard University and completed his residency at King Drew Medical Centre in Los Angeles.
