Sex trial ends with hung jury

The trial of a man accused or repeatedly having sex with a schoolgirl ended this week with a hung jury.

The defendant, a 46-year-old Paget man, denies four counts of sexually exploiting the complainant, who is under the age of 13, and one count of sexually assaulting the child.

All of the incidents were said to have occurred over a period of months, with the complainant saying she didn’t tell anyone because she was afraid she would get in trouble.

Neither he nor the complainant can be identified for legal reasons.

After hearing around a week of evidence, the 12 jurors were sent to deliberate on Monday, but were unable to come to a verdict.

The matter was adjourned until April 1, when it will return before the Supreme Court to be mentioned
