Switch off for Earth Hour

Family fun: Brothers Kimoy and Kamlin Cruickshank, eight and three, show off their face paint during last year’s Earth Hour festivities

Get ready to turn down the lights — Earth Hour is approaching.

The global event, on March 28, raises awareness about energy conservation — and this year it has linked up with Waterfront Properties Limited.

Hamilton will turn dark for an hour, allowing for a different form of lights to take over the city streets — a glow-in-the-dark, five-kilometre fun walk and fun run, which is expected to start and finish at Waterfront’s courtyard on Pitts Bay Road.

It will be the sixth year that Hamilton goes dark from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, in tandem with cities around the world.

Earth Hour originated in Sydney, Australia, and grew into a global environmental movement.

“We are working on lining up some great entertainment for the evening, with the event kicking off at 7pm and wrapping up around 10pm,” said Eugene Dean, a Greenrock founding member and chairman of the Earth Hour council organising events around it. “This is a great opportunity for families to come together, have fun and raise awareness for an increasingly important cause.”

The community is invited to the Waterfront on March 28. General information on the Earth Hour movement can be found at www.earthhour.org and at Greenrock’s website, www.greenrock.org
