Bell comes to club’s rescue

Tahj Bell in action for Hitching Town FC

Tahj Bell, the Bermuda goalkeeper, made a miraculous late save as his English club, Aylesbury United, held on for a 2-1 win away to Egham Town in a mid-table clash in the Southern League Division One Central last weekend.

On their second visit to Surrey in two weeks, Aylesbury had to wait until the 87th minute to turn their dominant performance into a winning one before Egham were denied a point by Bell.

In a poor start, Aylesbury conceded a goal after just eight minutes, but from that point on were the chief attacking threat, only to be frustrated in front of goal as Egham held on to their 1-0 lead at the half.

Aylesbury continued to threaten in the second half, and their patience was finally rewarded with a Stacey Field equaliser on 65 minutes and then, with time running out, an own goal by Danny Williamson to take a 2-1 lead. Substitute Shaun Owens, who had been on the pitch for only seven minutes, produced the right-wing cross that Williamson headed past his own goalkeeper.

The home side turned on the pressure in the closing moments and Bell’s late wonder save ensured all three points went back with them to Buckinghamshire.

Just before that goal, Bell had a moment of uncertainty, as the Bermudian spilt a low, bobbling shot, only to be let off the hook by his defence. But he made amends a minute from time by getting down with lightning-quick reflexes to save Haluna Masembe’s shot.

Deep into stoppage time, Masembe was again denied again by Bell when the 23-year-old advanced from his line to make another good save in a one-on-one situation.

Bell has made 71 appearances in England since signing for Hitchin Town in 2013 after initially going to Barnet on trial at the start of the 2013-14 season. He made 59 appearances for Hitchin before moving to Aylesbury last December, making 12 appearances, all but one in the league.

Aylesbury, who are eleventh in the table, are away to St Ives Town today, a team three places and two points ahead of them in the 22-team division.
