Warwick man denies $87,000 store theft

A 28-year-old Warwick man has pleaded not guilty to stealing jewellery to the value of $86,575 from ER Aubrey on Queen Street.

Kyle Smith was charged with trespassing on to the Pembroke store on October 12 last year and for stealing the goods.

Prosecutor Cindy Clarke told Senior Magistrate Juan Wolffe that Mr Smith was said to have entered the shop wearing a mask and smashed one of the display units cutting his hand on the glass. He was able to be traced down through the DNA left behind.

There are due to be six witnesses in the trial, which is likely to take up a whole day in court.

Mr Smith was released on bail of $10,000 with one like surety and is due for a mention on April 6. He must report to Somerset Police Station twice a week. His trial date is due on June 2.
