Hornets set sights on cup glory

Defending champions: Hornets will hope take a step closer to retaining the FA Cup, which they won last season after defeating Village, when they meet Trojans in the semi-finals

The Premier Division title is out of their hands, but Dandy Town will be determined to hang on to another trophy from last season, the FA Cup, when they meet Somerset Trojans in tonight’s semi-final at Goose Gosling Field.

Trojans are in the driver’s seat in the title race, requiring just a point in their final league game against relegation-threatened Southampton Rangers at Somerset Cricket Club to clinch their first championship in 22 years.

Hornets, who are three points behind the league leaders, are scheduled to take on struggling Flanagan’s Onions at Goose Gosling Field in their curtain call. Both games will be played on Sunday, April 5.

Coach Jomar Wilkinson’s side at least have their FA Cup fate in their own hands, with Trojans standing between them and a sixth appearance in the final in the last nine years.

Wilkinson admits that last weekend’s 2-2 draw at home to Southampton Rangers, who scored a last-gasp equaliser, was a devastating blow for the defending league and FA Cup champions who can now only retain their title on goal difference.

If Rangers, who are one place and one point above the relegation zone, show that same fighting spirit against Trojans then there could be one more twist in the league race.

“All is not lost, I still believe and I’m sure my players still believe,” Wilkinson said.

“We’ll lick our wounds but we have belief and we’ll keep on fighting and if Somerset drop three points then hopefully we’ll be right there to win the title.

“Rangers have a never-say-die attitude and obviously they are fighting relegation and it’s going to go right down to the wire.

“I’m sure they will be worthy opponents for Somerset and so we look forward to the last game of the season.”

Trojans and Hornets meet at 7pm, while Flanagan’s Onions face North Village in the other semi-final at 9pm, which will also be held at Goose Gosling Field.

There does not appear to be much separating the teams, with Trojans and Hornets the only sides still in the title race, while at the other end of the table just three points separate relegation-threatened Village and Onions.

Coach Mick Ward’s Onions, who finished third behind Village and Town last season, looked doomed before they beat St George’s 2-0 last weekend to lift themselves off the bottom of the table.

The result was a timely boost for Onions who go in search of their first appearance in a major final, but first they will have to get past a Village team that recorded two 4-2 victories over them in the league this season.

The FA Cup final will be held at the National Sports Centre on April 12.
