Where are the lionfish?

Tasty dish: Lionfish, said to be wonderful as plain fillet

March 19, 2015

Dear Sir,

A few years ago when lionfish were first recognised as a major problem for our reefs, devastating the local fish population (and especially the juveniles), two fisheries specialists from Florida, where they were suffering a similar problem, were brought in to advise.

These two gave an extremely interesting talk at the Aquarium about some of the steps they were taking — including their “Eat Them to Beat Them” campaign! At that time, North Rock had lionfish available, so I ordered it for a birthday party of seven and everyone really enjoyed it!

BUEI has had an excellent exhibit on for some time about the extreme dangers lionfish pose to our local reef fish.

I know that Miles do have lionfish in their fish department from time to time and in speaking to one of their staff a few days ago, he said that it is gone as soon as they put it out! Peter (at Speciality Inn), to whom I spoke recently, is just waiting to add it to his menu! Giorgio (at Lindo’s) was also very enthusiastic but I have yet to find lionfish in their fish section.

I will end with an simple plea to all of our local fishermen — lionfish is an excellent white fish that you can cook in any way you wish. Wonderful as plain fillet, or jazz it up as fish balls! Come on, guys, please start catching it seriously, and selling it to our restaurants and supermarkets.

Hungry for lionfish!
