Age is just a number: Bermuda’s Orchard won her division at the Xterra Costa Rica

Flora Duffy will not be the only Bermuda triathlete at the Xterra World Championships in Maui this year.

Laurie Orchard and Neil de ste Croix will also be in Hawaii after they qualified at the Xterra Costa Rica event this weekend.

Orchard won the female 40-45 division, with De ste Croix topping the 50-54 male category.

The triathlon took place in and around the Reservada Conchal nature reserve, with the 1.5-mile swim comprising of two laps of a 750 metres course that required the athletes to exit the water after the first lap.

Just as demanding was the 28.6-kilometre bike, which took in sections of the beach and included mandatory dismount areas for a series of steps and long climbs.

Meanwhile, the run took place in 90 degree heat, conditions which De ste Croix said repeat competitors called “the most brutal they had experienced.”
