BFA attends beach soccer seminar in El Salvador

Mark Wade, the Bermuda Football Association chairman of player development, and executive member Antoine Augustus have attended a Fifa Beach Soccer seminar in El Salvador.

The four-day seminar included a case study from the Bahamas Football Association, detailing how they have embraced beach soccer, which is recognised by Fifa as a small-sided version of the game.

The Bahamas Football Association will host the Beach Soccer World Cup in 2017. In addition, there were presentations from El Salvador, Mexico, and the United States.

Fifa development and technical officers also gave a presentation on the available programmes to assist in growing Beach Soccer throughout the world, and, in particular, the Concacaf region.

Augustus said: “With the beautiful location and beaches we have in Bermuda we are well-suited to beach soccer. Our goal is to develop beach soccer as part of our national programme. Hopefully, in three to five years, we can be part of a Concacaf Beach Soccer regional tournament.”

During their stay in El Salvador, the BFA delegates watched the quarter-final, semi-final, and final of the Concacaf Beach Soccer Championship.

The BFA executive members will meet this week to discuss the development of beach soccer in Bermuda.

n The BFA have announced that Nathan Atcheson has been appointed as director of marketing and communications.

Atcheson will have specific responsibilities related to marketing, fundraising, website management, social media management, and media relations.

n Devonshire Colts were crowned champions of the Under-14 Appleby Youth Knockout Cup, defeating Richmond Harriers 2-0. Colts’ scorers were Santze Burgess and Jacori Paynter.

PHC Zebras beat BAA Wanderers 1-0 in the under-16 final, with Tahjea Welch scoring the only goal.

Troy Lewis, the BFA’s head of youth development, said: “The BFA wishes to congratulate Devonshire Colts and PHC on their victories. We also wish to acknowledge Richmond Harriers and BAA for reaching the finals. The Knockout Cup finals were a great end to a successful Appleby Youth League season.”
