Town seeks tour operator

East End: The Bermuda Economic Development Corporation is welcoming proposals for the running of a tour operator business in St George that will encompass nearby forts

A tour operator opportunity for the world heritage site of St George’s and nearby forts is up for grabs.

The Bermuda Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) is looking for proposals from potential guides to provide transport for 90-minute tours to Gates Fort, Alexandra Battery and Fort St Catherine over the summer.

The proposal follows the success of tours of the three historic forts created for the for the arts and culture season last winter.

BEDC St George’s economic development officer Ray Lambert said: “We were very pleased by the popularity of the winter tour.

“We’re looking for a tour operator who can help us to build on that initial success.”

The successful bidder will be expected to use an existing script, which includes talking points, engaging experiences, timing breakdown and historical facts about the various forts and sites included in the UN world heritage site.

The original tour was developed as part of a plan to set up projects to boost the cultural tourism aspect of St George’s and St David’s, a major part of the Bermuda National Tourism Plan.

The selected operator will also get access to a sample of the arts and culture season model, a potential partnership with Fort St Catherine and possible use of established sales and ticketing offices at the visitor information centres and world heritage centre.

A schedule of the tour, ticket prices and information about the capacity, age and condition of the vehicle to be used should be submitted with proposals, which will be reviewed by the world heritage site management committee.

Interested bidders should send their submissions to Mr Lambert at Storekeeper’s Cottage, 5 Ordnance Island, Town of St George, or e-mail rlambert@bedc.bm.

For more information, Mr Lambert can be contacted at 292 5570 or 704 9057.
