Bragging rights on the line

The Schools Relays Classic takes place tomorrow at the National Stadium

Elliott Primary, TN Tatem and CedarBridge Academy will put their titles on the line when the seventh Schools Relay Classic is held tomorrow at the National Stadium, National Sports Centre.

Perennial contenders TN Tatem have proven to be the team to beat in the middle schools competition, where they have emerged as champions the last five years.

“Elliott are the defending champions and I’m sure they will be challenged again by West Pembroke and Harrington Sound,” said Cal Simons, the co-meet director of the event organised by Bermuda Pacers Track Club.

“In the middle schools, TN Tatem have won for the last five years and from what I gather from talking to teachers at Whitney Institute, they plan to dethrone them.

“We have at least 14 primary school teams confirmed, five of the middle school teams as well as the two senior schools, Berkeley and CedarBridge.

“They are putting in three or four teams in each race, the 4x100 and 4x400 metres.”

There will also be special services, company and club relay races as an added attraction, starting at 6.30pm and 7.55pm, in between the 4x400 finals at 7pm and the 4x100 finals at 8pm.

“We’re hoping to have teams from the Bermuda Union of Teachers, the Police Service, Fire and Corrections Department,” Simons said. “AIG and Bermuda College, as well as one or two others are putting in teams so it should be an exciting night for track and field.”

Kyrah Scraders and Azaire Smith will be representing Berkeley’s female team while Jah-Nhai Perinchief and Aaron Jacobs, who recently competed in the Carifta Games in St Kitts, will represent CedarBridge and Berkeley respectively.

Prize money of $300, $200 and $100 will be presented to the top three teams in each division.

Preliminary races for the 4x100 start at 5.30pm with the heats for the primary and middle schools.
