No unity call needed if divisions addressed
Dear Sir,
Recently I have heard Sir John Swan, on a number of occasions, call for Bermudians to “work together” for the success of the America’s Cup.
The other evening the Premier did the same thing, that is appealed to Bermudians to “work together”.
I could not help thinking when I heard them that if either of them, or both of them, had followed, or were to follow, all of the recommendations in the Pitt Report or other reports, or even put forward proposals of their own to reduce the racial and economic disparities which is the great divide, deliberately maintained by various Governments over the decades, they might not have the need for such an appeal.
We, as Bermudians, would more likely be working together and would be doing so, even without the America’s Cup. But in this deliberately divided two-tiered society it is difficult to “work together” even with the America’s Cup, particularly because many believe that with the America’s Cup most of the benefits will go to those who have always benefited most in this two-tiered society.
