PAC resumes hearing into Port Royal affairs

The Public Accounts Committee today holds its second public meeting to investigate a highly critical special report by the Auditor General into the refurbishment of the Port Royal Golf Course.

The PAC, chaired by Deputy Leader of the Progressive Labour Party David Burt, convenes at 2.30pm in the Senate Chamber of the Cabinet Building.

Former Port Royal trustees Wendell Brown and Bob Wilson told last week’s hearing that they had been disappointed by the report by Heather Jacobs Matthews, issued in October 2014, which faulted the “lack of oversight, cost overruns and inadequate accounting” for the project.

Between 2007 and 2011, the Bermuda Government approved $24.5 million for the job that began in November 2007 with $13.6 million approved to bring Port Royal up to the standards of a Professional Golfers of America (PGA) tour. The PAC, composed of Members of Parliament, is authorised by the House to closely examine and report on the use of public funds granted by the legislature.

It also investigates the findings of the Auditor General, and other special reports.
