Bulford ‘had keys to house with CCTV’

Detectives discovered a CCTV system and a ballistics vest in a small house that a man suspected of money laundering had the keys for, a court heard.

Kenith Bulford was arrested at the airport in March 2013 as he checked on to the BA flight after being found with a large bundle of American currency in his jacket pocket.

Yesterday a Supreme Court jury was told that some months later officers searched a one-bedroom house in Cambridge Road, Sandys as a result of police “intelligence”.

Detective Sergeant Paul Ridley told the court that the keys for the residence had been taken from Mr Bulford when he was arrested for a second time.

DS Ridley said: “The property was a one-bedroom small property.

“I noticed that there were bars in the front windows and CCTV providing a live feed into the TV in the bedroom. The camera was fixed at the back showing the back yard of the property.

“I switched the TV on and noted it was operational, although not recoding.

“The doors were double bolted. During the search I recall there being a ballistics vest in the property.

“It was navy blue and in a small storage cupboard.

“There was also a cellphone and a small amount of cash. I also noticed there to be a number if DVDS; one called Code Red. one The Miseducation of the Bloods and another Hood to Hood. They were all of the violent gang genre.”

Jurors had previously heard that Mr Bulford, 40, together with Melina Bean and Wanda Bowen, were detained at the airport on March 5, 2013 on suspicion of money laundering.

The two women’s bags were searched and police recovered nearly $315,000 in US currency hidden in the soles of new Nike sneakers, while just over $10,000 in cash was found on Mr Bulford and in his luggage.

DS Ridley told the court that he arrested Bulford on March 5 in the airport and had been involved in the search of Ms Bowen’s suitcase.

He said: “I asked Mr Bulford to place the contents of his pockets on the table.

“He placed a silver cellphone down, some keys and a wallet.

“I then informed him I was going to make a search of his person. He then went into his left breast pocket of his jacket and removed a quantity of US currency in denominations of $50 and $100.

“All the notes were placed in a stack and folded and they had an elastic band around them.”

DS Ridley added: “Upon opening Ms Bowen’s bag I saw a plumb coloured men’s training shoe that arose my attention immediately. They seemed out of place with the other female clothing in the luggage.

“Having picked up the shoe I noticed it smelt strongly of glue and it appeared to be new stitching on the inside of the sole.

“On pressing the sole I found it did not have the expected spongy feel. It was firm, too firm. My concern was that there were items hidden in the shoes, and as a result I arrested Ms Bowen at 7.30pm.”

The court heard that Mr Bulford was interviewed by police twice after his initial March arrest, but exercised his right to silence on both occasions. He denies two charges of possessing the proceeds of crime.

The case continues.
