Lack of education the cause of Baltimore riots

Anger and frustraton: A man throws a brick at police during riots that followed the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore

Dear Sir,

With the dishonest criticisms from the Opposition that get absorbed by uninformed, uneducated people, it looks as if the OBA are treading water.

Watching Baltimore’s violent demonstrations, one sees an overall picture of neglect in every form. The operative words are a lack of education.

The crowd is made up of several elemental losses.

The most important of all, and always will be with demonstrations, is education — the lack of understanding which leads to frustration, anger, poverty, crime and despair.

Half of these rioters don’t care or know they are spoiling for a fight, any fight, just to let go on anything that relieves that pent up explosive pain and hurt — to be at one with the people and to have an excuse to vent.

Therein lies the danger a mob can inflict — untold damage within a few moments and ignite a situation to tragedy beyond belief.

There is, interestingly enough, after the haemorrhage of pent up feelings, a calm, retrospect and sanity, that turns into a good thing, a slow healing, lessons learnt and a justice that must be seen to be done.

The rogue perpetrators of this vicious behaviour must never be tolerated, sent back to training school and brought before a jury and judged or dismissed.

Emotions seem more combustible than I ever remember and there are freedoms that in my day would be unheard of, good or bad.

It is what it is, but we must cling to the standards that are vital for a decent civil existence on this lovely little small island, learn our lessons from Baltimore, keep the faith that we never ever again neglect our future generations’ education.

It should be deemed as a disgrace on this Island if any child leaves school without a set standard of efficiency.
