Bermuda sign off in dismal fashion

Glimmer of hope: Manders, the Bermuda No 3, put on 52 runs for the second wicket with Hemp

Bermuda’s ICC Americas Division One Twenty20 tournament ended on a disappointing note on Saturday when they lost by seven wickets to bottom team Suriname.

Hoping to finish with a victory after twice losing to Canada and the United States in the four-team tournament, Bermuda were beaten with one over remaining after Suriname chased down the 99 runs posted by Bermuda.

Left-handed opener Wasim Akram Haslim scored 39 off 46 balls in an opening partnership of 60 with Muneshwar Patandin, which set Suriname on their way to a second win over Bermuda after an upset in 2013.

Bermuda elected to bat and lost Dion Stovell in the second over for 2 before former captain David Hemp and Tre Manders, promoted to No 3, steadied things with a stand of 52 for the second wicket.

However, again Bermuda found scoring difficult as Hemp needed 30 balls to score his team high score of 28 while Manders faced 31 balls in scoring 21.

The only other player to reach double figures was tailender Jacobi Robinson with 14, coming in after Bermuda had slumped from 55 for two to 70 for six.

Patandin had Hemp stumped for 28 by wicketkeeper Khemraj Jaikaran. Two balls later Manders was caught by Troy Dudnath for 21 off Patandin and Bermuda had trouble re-establishing momentum after that with only Robinson offering some degree of resistance.

Haslim was the main destroyer with three for 15 with his spin.

He then came out at the start of the Suriname innings and led the way with his 39. Suriname lost two quick wickets as Bermuda fought back with Janeiro Tucker getting Patandin caught for 21 in the twelfth over before he ran out Akram from mid-on in the next over.

Tucker then bowled Gavin Singh for a two-ball duck. With the scores level, captain Mohindra Boodram secured Suriname’s win with a towering six down the ground off the last ball of the penultimate over. Boodram finished 26 not out and added an unbeaten 35 for the fourth wicket with Shazam Ramjohn.

Both teams ended the week with 1-5 records but Suriname are set to be relegated to Americas Division Two because of their vastly inferior run rate. Bermuda finished second from bottom.

Canada finished top of the group after their sixth straight win, beating the US by 23 runs in a low-scoring match.

Canada scored 127 for six and restricted the US to 104 for eight in their 20 overs.

Ruvindu Gunasekera’s third half-century in five games was the difference between the two teams.
