Fish fry tomorrow for overseas mission

Bermuda Overseas Missions is hosting a fish fry tomorrow to help to send 32 volunteers to help orphans in Africa.

Organisation president David Thompson said the group will be working with Habitat for Humanity to send 20 Bermudian students and 12 adults on a mission trip to Mulanje, Malawi, in July to build homes for orphans and other vulnerable children.

“Malawi has one of the world’s highest HIV/Aids infection and death rates,” Mr Thompson said. “More than 500,000 children have been left without parents and families. That’s approximately one quarter of all children aged 10 to 14 years who have been orphaned.

“It’s hard to imagine the scale of this human tragedy, and our volunteers will be helping to bring hope and housing to an area of the world that needs so much love and support.

“This is perhaps our most important mission in the 15 years that BOM has been working overseas and it would not be possible without the amazing support of local corporations such as Validus, Catlin, PartnerRe and CellOne. In fact, through their collective generosity, we will be able to take four students from the Beyond Rugby programme on this once-in-a-lifetime trip as well as helping to sponsor many other students joining us. ”

The students and volunteers have already begun their fundraising efforts, hosting car washes, dog grooming and roti sales.

The latest fundraiser, a fish fry, is scheduled to take place at Christ Church, Warwick, starting at 4pm, with food prepared by Keith’s Kitchen. Meals will cost $20.
