A raft of events aimed at “elevating the cultural area’s lure for visitors and residents alike” has been announced to take place in St George’s and St David’s Island — known collectively as Hub 1 in the National Tourism Plan.

The events, which include aerial tours of the Island in a Cessna 172 Skyhawk, are a culmination of months of planning by the Bermuda Tourism Authority and the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation, and include a number of activities focusing on the history of the Island.

This Saturday and Sunday the public are invited to enjoy an open house designed to highlight the activities, which take in the area’s heritage, beaches and other attractions.

There will be information about Cessna 172 Skyhawk plane tours in a new attraction for the Island that was revealed in The Royal Gazette this month. The business — Blue Sky Flights — is based at the Nato hangar in St David’s.

Among the regular activities scheduled for the season are Haunted History walking tours every Thursday, the St George’s Historical Re-enactments from Monday to Thursday and Saturdays, and a new Gunpowder Plot Party that will take place at Tobacco Bay from noon to 6pm on Sundays. The Olde Towne Market selling local art, food and crafts is to make a return and there will be a St George’s beach bus service allowing passengers to hop on and off visiting beaches, bars, forts and other attractions in the area.

St Peter’s Church, the oldest Anglican church in continuous use outside the British Isles, is also highlighted, as well as Fort St Catherine and Museum and the History in Hats exhibition at Bridge House off King Street.

“We congratulate the retailers, cultural attractions and other stakeholders in Hub 1 for making the East End experience even more unique and memorable,” said Pat Phillip-Fairn, the BTA’s chief product and experiences development officer.
