Horseshoe Bay romps to victory

Horseshoe Bay broke his maiden in spectacular fashion by romping to a seven-length victory yesterday in the 15:05 at Newmarket, the home of British Flat racing.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained horse, which is owned by the Bermuda Thoroughbred Racing syndicate, was every bit as dominant as his status as 5-4 favourite suggested in the Devils Dyke Maiden Stakes, the one-mile, four-furlong race featuring three-year-old horses that had not won before.

Ridden by Ryan Moore, arguably the most gifted Flat jockey in Britain, Horseshoe Bay let Libbard and former champion jockey Richard Hughes lead the way until the two-furlong pole, at which point Moore eased his ride ahead — and away.

Excellent Team, the 7-2 third favourite ridden by James Doyle, finished another 3¾ lengths back, with the rest of the seven-horse field somewhere in the Suffolk distance over a “juicy” circuit that was good to firm, good in places.

Afterwards, Moore described Horseshoe Bay as a bit “immature”, but said there was “plenty of improvement still to come”.

The Acclamation bay colt by Arch out of Sweepstake was in only his third race, taking a drop in class after finishing fourth in his Headquarters debut on April 15.
