Butterfield finishes fifth in Brazil

Butterfield missed out on a podium finish largely owing to a five-minute penalty

Tyler Butterfield finished fifth at the Ironman Latin American Championship Brazil in Florianópolis today.

The Bermuda triathlete, who posted a time of 8hr 5min 22sec, could have well been in the mix for a podium finish had he not served a five-minute penalty for a draft violation.

Marino Vahnoenacker, of Belgium, completed the 38-kilometre swim, 180km bike and 42.2km run in a time of 7:53:44, with Timothy O’Donnell, of the United States, second in 7:55:56, and Canadian Brent McMahaon third in 7:56:55.
