Murphy always thrilled to fly Bermuda’s flag

Murphy finished sixth in the triathlon at the previous Island Games two years ago

Tucker Murphy, the Bermuda triathlete, said that he never grows tired of representing his country on the international stage.

Murphy has already experienced two Winter Olympics, in Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014, where he competed as a cross-country skier, as well as last summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in triathlon.

The 33-year-old, a Rhodes will again be wearing Bermuda’s colours when he competes in this month’s NatWest Island Games in Jersey in the triathlon and team triathlon.

“It’s always exciting,” Murphy. a Rhodes Scholar. “You realise as you get a bit older that these opportunities get rarer.

“It’s exciting too because of the people, the Bermudians. We always have a good team and we have some good distance runners and triathletes. It’s just really nice to train and be around this group of people.”

Accompanying Murphy in men’s triathlon squad will be Travis Cooper, while Martina Olcheski-Bell, Karen Smith, Julia Hawley and Belinda Castree will make up the women’s team in Jersey.

Murphy finished sixth out of 44 athletes at the previous Island Games held in Bermuda two years ago, and will be hoping to improve on that finish this time around.

“I’m not sure why, but it’s taken a bit longer to get in good shape although I’m starting to feel good,” said Murphy, who finished third in last month’s AON National Sprint Triathlon Championships.

“I’d like to aim for where I was in the last Island Games, and maybe improve on that a little bit, But we’ll see if it all comes together. I’d have to have a good day.”

A former Saltus Grammar School pupil, Murphy has not ruled making a third appearance at the Winter Olympics.

“After the Games I’m going to take a bit of a break for a few months,” he said. “In terms of the [Winter Olympics], I would have to decide two years out whether I can train again for that.”
