Absolute discharge for park fight pair

Two men have received absolute discharges for fighting at Admiralty House Park.

Troy Hewey, 21, of Pembroke, and Marcus Wilson, 22, of Warwick, both pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Prosecutor Larissa Burgess told the court that Police responded to the incident at about 6.30pm on Monday and saw a “violent exchange of punches”, with the men “viciously fighting”.

The officers tasered both men and handcuffed Hewey, but could not reach Wilson because a large crowd was in their way.

Captor spray was used to disperse the people gathered around and as the officers escorted Hewey away from the area, they saw Wilson approach and arrested him.

In court, Hewey apologised and said he had too much to drink, assuring Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that this would never happen again.

Wilson said he began fighting because Hewey had stolen his chain and he was trying to recover this. He added that the incident taught him not to fight in public.

While sentencing the men, Mr Tokunbo took into account that they had no previous convictions, entered an early guilty plea, expressed remorse and had been in custody since Monday. He gave both men an absolute discharge.
