Broken bridge lights urgently need repaired

A reader says the lights at Somerset Bridge need to be repaired (File photo by David Skinner)

Dear Sir,

May I bring to the attention of the minister responsible for our waterways, an urgent marine navigational hazard.

The traffic lights at Somerset Bridge have been out of order for several months.

Many boaters along with tour operators travel under the bridge.

Last week when approaching Somerset Bridge in my boat, the lights were still not in operation.

It was the third time this year I have encountered the problem of journeying under the bridge not knowing if I would encounter another vessel coming from the opposite direction.

Boat captains cannot see an approaching boat until they are smack in the middle of the waterway directly under the bridge.

Due to the narrowness of the waterway under the bridge, navigating it is somewhat of a challenge. With a fast tide it could lead to a collision, resulting in damage to personnel and vessel.

It is of the utmost urgency to fix and have these lights working, before a vessel gets damaged or, heaven forbid, anyone gets hurt.

Thank you, for letting me bring this to the attention of the powers to be.
