Bermuda one win from semi-finals

Drawing the foul: Riley goes for the basket against Suriname

Bermuda are one win away from the semi-finals of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation Champions in the British Virgin Islands.

A comfortable 71-50 defeat of Suriname yesterday in Tortola, coupled with Antigua’s 69-61 loss to defending champions Bahamas leaves Bermuda second with a game to play.

The team take on Antigua this afternoon knowing that a win will guarantee them a place in the final four.

Yesterday’s win was Bermuda’s second of the tournament, following a 74-65 triumph over Guyana on Wednesday. An opening day 51-38 defeat to Bahamas was the only blot on their record.

Chris Crumpler provided the platform for the win with 22 points, six rebounds and four steals, while Jonathan Lowe and Sullivan Philips contributed 12 and 11 points respectively.

Bermuda meant business right from the opening tip going on a 21-6 run to end the first quarter, and held the lead going into half-time 38-27.

Crumpler shot 50 per cent from the floor and hit six of 12 three-pointers, but it was on the boards where Bermuda won the game, racking up 15 points on second chances compared to Suriname’s four.

Suriname made a 6-0 run at the start of the third quarter with back to back three-pointers from Bruce Mawuli Zamuel in the first three minutes of play to bring them within five, but Bermuda immediately responded with a run of their own.

Yves Geodschalk and Sergio DeRandamiede scored 11 points each and Bermuda closed out the game with a 20-8 run in the final period to ensure victory.

Against Guyana it was Philips that did the most damage, scoring 24 points, with 11 rebounds, while Crumpler added 16 points, and Yusef Riley 11.

Bermuda led 15-9 after the first quarter, and after a Keron McKenzie three-pointer tied it for Guyana at 4:08 mark of the second, Bermuda closed out the half on a 9-2 run to lead 32-23 at half-time.

Gordon James gave Guyana their first lead since midway through the first quarter with a three-point play to make it 38-36 with 5:06 left in the third, but Bermuda went on a 5-0 run of their own to retake the lead.

A three-pointer by Jason Simons with 40secs left in the third stretched the lead to seven before the quarter ended with Bermuda up 50-45.

James got his team to within two points with another three-pointer, making the score 52-50, and then to within four at 61-57 with 4:19 to play, but Guyana could get no closer, scoring just two points over the next 2:19.
