Mayho blows away his title rivals

Chasing pack: competitors make their way up Frog Lane during the RMS Construction Road Race Championships

Dominique Mayho and Karen Bordage warmed up for this month’s NatWest Island Games in Jersey by claiming the men’s and women’s titles in yesterday’s RMS Construction Road Race Championships.

Both riders won their respective divisions in contrasting fashion, Mayho blowing away the field while Bordage outduelled her Bermuda team-mate Zoenique Williams in a classic sprint to the finish line.

Mayho’s winning time of 2hr 37min and 48sec was more than three minutes faster than second placed rider Shannon Lawrence, the two times Sinclair Packwood Memorial Race champion, who crossed the line in 2:40:29.

Third went to the evergreen Anthony Bartley who beat out several top riders, including Mayho’s Island Games team-mate Darren Glasford, to claim the final spot on the podium after finishing in 2:43:18.

Bordage took the women’s title after covering the shorter women’s course in 1:54:33 closely shadowed by Williams who crossed the line sixth hundredths of a second behind the leader.

Rounding off the podium was Bordage and Williams’s Island Games team-mate, Gabriella Arnold, who crossed the line in 1:54:38.

Kaden Hopkins won the junior boys title in a time of 1:38:18 with Dylan Hill taking second in 1:39:31 and Tyler Smith third in 1:39:41.

Only three riders competed in the junior women’s division which was won by Alyssa Rowse in 1:20:15.

Rowse was followed across the line by Tristan Narraway, who finished in 1:20:19, and Cassandra McPhee who covered the course in 1:20:29.

Yesterday’s road race started and ended at the Police Headquarters in Prospect, Devonshire.
