House: New car laws for hospital physicians?

Changes to the Island’s motor laws ushering in second cars for medical practitioners employed by the hospital went before the House of Assembly yesterday morning.

Shawn Crockwell, the Minister of Tourism Development and Transport, said the change would allow for up to 40 additional vehicles being licensed for Bermuda’s roads.

Traditionally the Bermuda Hospitals Board employed few physicians, and their roles were primarily administrative rather than actively practising medicine, meaning they were rarely called out during unsocial hours – but that situation has changed in recent years, Mr Crockwell said.

Shadow Transport Minister Lawrence Trott, gave the Opposition’s support.

Physicians in private practice already have the right to own a second car, and a doctor leaving BHB for his own practice could still do so — but a practitioner employed by BHB who stops practising would have to give up the second vehicle.
