Moore gold for Bermuda

Just golden: Moore

Madelyn Moore bagged her third gold medal of the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championships on Saturday.

Moore added the 100m freestyle gold to her 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle triumphs, although she did not make things easy for herself.

The 15-year-old built a commanding lead in the first 80 metres, before Ireyra Tamayo, of Panama, chased her down, pushed her hard over the final 10 metres, and ultimately only finished two-hundredths of a second behind the Bermuda swimmer. Moore came home in 58.90sec, Tamayo took silver in 58.92, with Helena Moreno, of Costa Rica, taking bronze in 59.46. Bermuda team-mate Ashley Irby put in a good performance in the same race, finishing eighth in 1:02.42.

Moore had less luck in the 50m butterfly, slipping off the blocks at the start and finishing fourth in 29.94.

Jesse Washington also swam in two finals on the last day of the championships, breaking his own record in the 100m freestyle as he finished fifth in 53.29.

Washington also swam in the 50m butterfly, and finished sixth in that final, posting a time of 27:00, in a race won by Franco Reyes, of Panama, in 25.82.

Ben Smith, the Bermuda national coach, praised his team’s performance and said they had learned some valuable lessons during their time in Barbados.

“We are very proud of this group of eight young swimmers who performed well against strong competition over five days,” Smith said. “They learned more about racing and staying fast throughout the meet, [and] that will help them in the future.”
