Time for something new in politics

Dear Sir,

Speaking politically, are we beyond the scope of natural evolution?

It probably feels as though we are immune to change and that progress is an elusive dream befitting the companionship of only those who forecast world peace, the end of war and a land where the tiger will lie down beside the deer.

The cracks are in the wall and if no remediation is carried out, the walls will tumble into a state of anarchy.

I hate to remind everyone that at one time talk of dismantling the UBP was considered lunacy and logistically impractical.

It’s amazing how fast arrogance grows and, as usual, probably because of all the fertilisers. Scientists have long concluded that adaptability is the key to survival and those species who undergo metamorphosis prosper.

There are some who believe that the PLP must never change and that the essence of their cause is protected by the processes and people already in place.

Similarly, there are those who will ardently advocate that the OBA in its present form is what Bermuda needs and the naysayers are simply too ignorant to recognise it.

Both are seriously flawed. The latter in their self-absorption are assisting in the polarisation of a country desperately in need of unity. The other, with their limited sense of their role in a country in desperate need of a magnanimous leadership that can embrace everyone, cannot bring the confidence needed to sustain a modern economy.

We are heading off the cliff unless something new and earth-shaking among our politic happens.

Basically, everyone in the House under the current construct is redundant. I won’t say the persons are useless — it’s their construct and the weak inclinations of those who take advantage to enable themselves at the expense of Bermuda having a secure future.

Can we change it? Nothing is impossible, however, the issue or question is how?

The first question — and a personal one for many politicians — is to ask where does their first loyalty lie?

Is it to their seat, paycheque and pension, or their party, when it should be the country?

This is not a question for some to respond with platitudes or grandstanding empty political utterances, but to truthfully ask, why am I here? Whom do I serve? Am I effective?

The PLP needs a transfusion of new blood. The OBA had an audition — we all know they had a voice, but they croaked and auditions are a one-shot deal.
