Yes, that was Lillian Lightbourn you just saw on TV. The Bermudian model is fluttering her lashes in a Maybelline commercial that’s now on air.

She appears alongside supermodel Charlotte Kemp Muhl, advertising a new mascara that makes lashes look “attractively disarranged”.

The pair put on Maybelline’s Colossal Chaotic Lash Mascara and then head to a party.

“The audition for this commercial was completely different from any I’ve done,” said the outgoing Miss Bermuda. “They wanted to know all about me. That was the best part of the audition.”

She was cast because of her personality, as well as her looks. One of the questions asked was what was the craziest thing she’d done to date.

“I am not one to do crazy things,” she said. “I told them how I went with my church, The Rock, in New York to Brooklyn at midnight, stood out on the sidewalk and encouraged people to freestyle with us. We had a guitar and a microphone. I started to beatbox.”

The casting agents then demanded she beatbox.

“I did that for a second,” she said. “It was fun.”

Ms Lightbourn, who is in her early 20s, has appeared in ad campaigns for Nike and Sephora. She has high hopes for major exposure through the Maybelline commercial since MTV is watched by millions globally.

“It will probably also be seen on other channels,” she said.

Miss Lightbourn is frequently seen behind Ms Muhl or next to her in the commercial. “This wasn’t just me looking pretty and turning my head,” she said. “I had to act. This was different because there were a lot of extras, and smoke. A chandelier falls in the commercial. There were so many different things to be shot. It was a lot of fun.”

She enjoyed working with Ms Muhl, who is also an actress and musician.

“I never had a bad moment,” said Miss Lightbourn. “She was good to work with. We just had to have fun on the set.”

She said the work was at times very tiring.

“You always have to be aware of the camera,” she said. “The director is always telling you to move this way, or do this. You have to be aware of the other model. At the same time, music is playing and you need to loosen up and be free with it. There is a lot of multi-tasking involved.”

She hasn’t sacrificed her principles in the five years she’s been modelling in New York.

“I was at a fitting and they wanted me to wear a see-through dress on the runway,” she said. “I refused. You win some and you lose some.”

She said other models were shocked that she stood her ground.

“Three years later, one of them came to me and said that had really made an impression on her,” she said.

“Once you are sure of who you are, and what you stand for, other people will respect you for that.

“You don’t have to sacrifice your faith or your morals. Whether people think that is cool, or not, I have to be me. Even when I am at jobs that I don’t agree with, I will speak up in the most respectful way.”

Miss Lightbourn represented Bermuda in the Miss World pageant last year in London. Sunday she passes on the crown at the Fairmont Southampton.
