Hurricane players showcase skills for college coaches

Successful trip: Team Hurricane

Bermuda’s Team Hurricane Basketball Academy players closed down their season with a chance to showcase their talents in front of NCAA coaches at the Global Squad’s Second Annual International Showcase.

The event, organised by the Alexander Basketball Academy and held in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, gives international athletes a chance to experience firsthand what’s involved in the college recruitment process as they compete in front of dozens of coaches, including many from Division 1 schools.

The squad, lead by Doug Reed, Team Hurricane head coach and founder, finished with two wins over a five game weekend.

“The experience they gained from this event is invaluable,” Reed said. “Our players got a first hand look at the size, speed and talent level of players throughout the world who share the same dreams and aspirations as they do.

“Our players saw the serious business of recruiting as coaches come into the gym donning their school logos and with notebooks in hand in order to scout and take notes on players. Such an experience can only help motivate players to continue to improve.”

The event was the final leg of a season of international competition as well as continued training for the Team Hurricane athletes.

“To be invited to showcase our skills and abilities and to play the sport we love in front of college coaches in hopes to get recruited is an experience I won’t forget,” Mykal Glasgow, of Berkeley Institute, said.

Glasgow joined Zachary Johnson, Christian Liyanage, Yontz Sutton, Raushon Tankard, Sean Tucker, Bryce Gonsalves, Jorel Smith, and Darae Smith to form Bermuda’s squad for the event.

“It was a great and humbling experience that we were given a chance to play in front of big name coaches from all around the United States,” Johnson, of Mount Saint Agnes, said.

Team Hurricane is a charity that seeks to provide quality basketball training for students to reach their athletic and academic potential.

“I wish to thank all who have contributed generously to our programmes,” Reed said.

The group of sponsors includes ABWilson Photography, Ace Group, Allied World Assurance, Argus Group, Butterfield & Vallis, FIL Limited, Jardine Matheson International Services, Montpelier Re Foundation, Orbis, The Peter Cundill Foundation, Tokio Millenium, Validus RE, XL Group, Zurich Insurance Company, and other private donors.
