Riker and Brewer lead the way in Barbados

Strong showing: Bermuda’s junior squash players did well in Barbados

Charlie Riker’s appearance in the final of the under-13 boys group was the highlight of Bermuda’s performance at the Junior Caribbean Squash Championships in Barbados.

Riker came up just short in yesterday’s final, slipping to a 11-4, 11-2, 11-3 defeat at the hands of top-seed Shomari Wiltshire, from Guyana.

The unranked Riker was dominant in the boys under-13 group, not losing a game as he cruised through the bracket, including an 11-6, 11-2, 11-1 victory over second-seeded Darien Benn of Barbados in the semi-finals.

Abigail Brewer was Bermuda’s other top performer, taking third place in the girls under-13 bracket with a win over Giovanna Miller-Alexander of Eastern Caribbean 11-4, 11-8, 11-8 in the consolation round after a semi-finals loss to Sumairaa Suleman of Barbados.

The other members of the Bermuda team also put in strong performances, with Charlotte Toogood reaching the quarter-finals in the girls under-15 competition before losing to Makeda Harding, from Guyana, 11-3, 11-8, 14-12.

Madeleine Rose went down in the first round of the girls under-17 bracket to Emma Turnbull, from the Cayman Islands, 11-3, 11-8, 14-12. Tiye Williams, competing in the girls under-19 bracket, lost to Guyana’s Taylor Fernandes 11-6, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8 in first round.

Susana Armano made it to the quarter-finals in the under-19 bracket but lost to first seed Akeila Wilshire.

Dylan Muldoon lost in the second round of the boys under-19 bracket to Jason Doyle, from Eastern Caribbean, 11-2, 11-3, 11-3, while Kion Knights lost in the quarter-finals of the boys under-19 to Nyron Joseph of Guyana 11-13, 11-3, 11-8, 11-6.

Knights worked his way to the fifth-place game in the consolation bracket, but lost to Doyle.

Dylan Pratt lost to Josiah Griffith from Barbados in the boys under-17 quarter-finals, 11-4, 11-1, 11-1.

Taylor Carrick, competing in the boys under-15 bracket, lost in the quarter-finals 11-3, 15-13, 11-2 to Kai Bentick, from Eastern Caribbean.
