BAA is preparing to send two young footballers to Barcelona to take part in a week long training camp with Barcelona feeder club Cornellá.

The opportunity is being offered as part of the Bermuda Summer Football School, an intensive summer camp under way for players aged 8 to 14. The 3½-week summer camp is an extension of the World Sports Academy Barcelona programme, and has been paid a visit by Regillio Simons, former top-flight striker in the Dutch league, and sons Faustino and Xavi.

The 12-year-old Xavi is recognised as one of the top youth players at Barcelona’s academy and spent time in Bermuda interacting with players at the camp, while older brother Faustino is the coach of Cornellá.

“We want to link with Cornellá and provide an opportunity for players to go and experience the training over there,” Kenny Thompson, BAA’s technical director, said.

The trip will be offered to two young footballers selected from the 80 players at the camp. Players have not yet been selected, as Thompson and his staff assess potential candidates.

“We’re keeping an eye open for players that have the technical ability, as well as the right attitude and mentality that they can get an opportunity where we would assist them to go to a week-long training camp in Barcelona,” Thompson said.

“The camp runs until next week Wednesday, so we’re still observing and trying to decide who we’ll select.”
