Bascome focused on female education

On a mission: Bascome

David Bascome is on a mission to create a sports school for women in Bermuda.

The former professional footballer said the idea evolved from meeting with Naquita Robinson, the coach of the Bermuda women’s team.

The B Pro Sports School”will be more than just teaching skills and engaging in teamwork. The school is meant to take the young female players, raging from ages 4 to 25, to the highest level and instil career development and survival skills in them.

“I really want to do something for women in Bermuda,” Bascome said.

The school will have nine mandatory workshops that start in December, and will include modules on how to open a bank account, and applying for college. The workshops will also be open to students who are not attending the B Pro Sorts School.

“We want to help create change in Bermuda, but the biggest thing is to help empower our young women,” Bascome said. Registration for the school is already under way at the TN Tatem Middle School, with evaluation for class placement taking place next month.

Players will be placed in different levels, developing class, advanced programme, college prospects and professionals, with places set on ability, not age.

The school, will operate after regular school hours during term-time, and will include football training twice a week.

Bascome is keen to stress that the players who join the school will not be leaving their local team.

“Each one of the young females that actually join us will not be separated from their club,’ he said.

There will also be opportunities for players to be scouted by coaches from US pro league and Super Y league.

For now, it is all about football, but that is not the only vision Bascome sees for the next year.

“The first year we’re going to focus on football, and then we’re going to move to different sports,” he said.

Ultimately, Bascome hopes the school will increase the opportunities for young female football players in Bermuda and also encourage them to stay in the sport.
