Be generous as you cannot take it with you

Dear Sir,

Technology is moving so fast, the smartphone can do everything for you.

Productivity is increasing, takes less and less time to do the things today than it did 50 years ago.

Cars are more efficient, communication is fast, food is mass produced.

So why is life getting more expensive, why is the middle class shrinking, the engine of capitalism.

The answer is simple, too much greed at the top.

Lloyd Blankfein at Goldman Sachs and Jeff Immelt at GE (stock has not moved in ten years) are multi-millionaires, while McNerney at Boeing got a $59 million retirement package.

When you prune a tree you prune at the top not take out the roots.

If capitalism wants to succeed where socialism and communism have miserably failed, the powers that be must distribute income more equally.

In the capitalised world no one should be homeless or go without food.

Every billionaire or millionaire should be like Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, worth $80 billion and who has already given away $20 billion in philanthropy.

To all those millionaire Bermudians out there, remember you can’t take one penny with one, so be more generous to your fellow Bermudians.

Remember Ferdinand Arnold, Ricky Faries, Alvin Ferreira — all millionaires, all dead in their fifties and couldn’t take one penny with them.

Be more generous Bermuda.

OBSERVER, Sandys
