Smith continues strong summer

Impressive: Smith

Tyler Smith continues to be one of the top finishers in junior triathlons around the world, despite being among the youngest competing in his age group.

Smith, turning 17 this year, finished eleventh in the Junior Elite Canadian Triathlon Championships in Magog, Quebec this weekend.

Smith was near the front of a deep field of 76, finishing in 59min 43sec with splits of 9:43 for the 750m swim, 31:40 for the 20km bike and 17:02 for the 5km run.

Canadian Stefan Daniel was first with a time of 58:26, little more than a minute in front of Smith.

This comes on the heels of Smith’s tenth place finish at the European Junior Elite Championships in Chateroux last week and has the young Bermudian looking strong as he continues to prepare for the World Junior Elite Triathlon Championships taking place in Chicago this September.

Erica Hawley, competing in the women’s 16-19 age group over the same distance, came fourteenth with a time of 1hr 9min 12sec, three minutes behind winner Kyla Roy.

Alex Pilgrim, competing in the Canadian Under-15 Triathlon Championships, finished twelfth with a time of 43:58.

Rebecca Harrison finished 51st in the girls event with a time of 57:17.
