Leverock convinced his team can reach play-offs

Leadership qualities: Leverock, left, has been a key player for Harrisburg this season

Dante Leverock, the Bermuda defender, has backed Harrisburg City Islanders to force their way into the United Soccer Leagues Eastern Conference play-offs this season.

Harrisburg are seventh in the 12-team table and just three points outside the play-off spots with two games in hand and 11 matches remaining.

Leverock, who signed for the Pennsylvania side after impressing in pre-season, remains convinced that coach Bill Becher’s young team have enough quality to finish in the top six.

“I’m very pleased with how the season is going so far,” said Leverock, who has been regular starter at centre half this season.

“Before the season started I had to prove to the manager that I deserved to be starting and after scoring on my debut [in a 1-1 draw away to Charlotte Independence] I haven’t looked back, featuring in every game I’ve been available for.

“We have a very young team and are still pushing for the play-offs. It’s going to be tough but we have some games in hand and I’m convinced we can get a play-off spot.”

Leverock started out as a physical striker in the target-man mould before being converted into a centre half two years ago while playing for Leatherhead in the Ryman Isthmian League in London.

Boasting a muscular 6ft 4in frame, the 22-year-old believes his defensive qualities have improved this season and feels he has become a more vocal presence in the dressing room.

“Being in the professional environment has really helped me to develop as a defender in a short period of time,” Leverock said.

“I still have a lot to improve upon and I have developed mentally as a player especially in remaining focused even during setbacks.

“I’ve definitely had to take on more responsibly and become a leader on the pitch.”

The former Dandy Town player was an ever-present during Bermuda’s 2016 World Cup qualifying campaign and would like for more of the Island’s players to make the step-up to the professional game.

“Turning pro and playing in my first World Cup qualifying campaign has been a blessing for me,” said Leverock, who trained with David Bascome’s Baltimore Blast, a professional indoor team, prior to joining Harrisburg.

“I feel the Bermuda players and coaches proved that we have something special and with more players playing professionally the team will only improve.”

Leverock’s ambition is to sign for a Major League Soccer side although he insists he is more than happy to continue his football education at Harrisburg for the time being.

“Once the season is over I’ll most likely take a vacation and reassess my situation,” he said.

“I’ve had plenty of positive feedback about playing at a higher level in the United States next season and that’s my ultimate goal. However, I’m very happy at Harrisburg and love playing here.”

Harrisburg are at home to Richmond Kickers at the Skyline Sports Complex on Saturday.
