Wells in positive frame of mind

Nahki Wells and Huddersfield Town will be looking to pick up where they left off last season when they travel to KC Stadium today to face Sky Bet Championship rivals Hull City.

Huddersfield are unbeaten in their last seven league games and will certainly be keen to kick the new campaign off with a bang against a City side who are managed by Steve Bruce, the former Huddersfield manager and Manchester United defender.

Wells is cautiously optimistic that the visitors can come away with a positive result, but knows the task won’t be easy against a team that only a few months ago were playing in the Barclays Premier League.

“I don’t think we can look at names or at the teams and compare, obviously, because of the money they spend and the fact they have been in the Premier League,” Wells said. “But I don’t see why we can’t go there and look to leave with points and a good performance.”

Huddersfield got off to a poor start last year when they suffered a crushing 4-0 home defeat to Bournemouth in their season opener, a result that ultimately that cost former manager Mark Robins his job.

However, with a new season comes new promise, and Wells said it would mean so much to the club to be able to hit the ground running.

“It [a win] would mean a lot as last season we had a poor start and disruption with managerial issues after one game, so we are all looking to go to Hull and put on a good performance, but more importantly leave with points,” Wells said.

“We are all looking forward to tomorrow and we just have to get off to the best of starts.”

Huddersfield finished sixteenth in the 24-team Championship last season, a position Wells and his team-mates will be looking to improve upon this season.

“Our goal is to do better as a group, from points down to performances and stats,” he said. “We all know it’s a tough league and as you can see the league is only getting harder and harder each year.”

Wells’s strike partners James Vaughan and Ishmael Miller have been dogged by injury during the pre-season but could feature in today’s match, while Ryan Taylor, Sam Clucas, Isaac Hayden and Chuba Akpom are all expected to make their league debuts for City, who were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season.
