Dear Sir,

We came to Bermuda in June for our seventh four-week holidays and we would like to report a few things that happened to us during our visit.

On Thursday, June 18, we were walking down to the bus stop on South Road/Ocean Avenue to catch the No 1 bus to Hamilton when my wife tripped over a loose slate and fell.

She got up immediately and we sat down at the bench at the bus stop when a car pulled up and a young lady told us that, when travelling in the direction of Collector’s Hill, she had seen my wife fall and turned around to offer help.

We thank her because at that time we thought my wife had only grazed her right elbow.

Unfortunately we had to go to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital the next day, as my wife was in pain. There we were received and treated in a very friendly and professional way, and it was found out that my wife had fractured the radial head in her right elbow.

We decided to travel home earlier than planned, as she could no longer swim or ride a bike, and with the generous help of our hosts, who let us use their computer, etc, we were able to change our flight dates with BA.

On Saturday we decided to have a “farewell dinner” in our favourite Hamilton restaurant, the Red Carpet. After dinner we went down to Front Street to catch a taxi home to Devonshire, but there were no taxis at the stand outside Butterfield Bank.

A young man was sitting at the doorsteps outside the bank and he offered to call a taxi. While we were waiting, he asked us where we were from and we told him “Germany”. At first, he could not believe it and asked again, and then he exclaimed: “You have come such a long way to visit my country, thank you!”

In the meantime, a taxi had arrived, and the young man went to the driver, gave him some money and said: “Take these people where they want to go, I want to thank them for coming such a long way to visit my country!”

We were very surprised and, of course, we refused, but he wouldn’t take the money back and so we had a free ride home.

We do not know if these two people — the lady and the gentleman — will read this, but we would like to thank them once again. We consider it our duty to tell the public about the two incidents. This is the spirit of Bermuda that we love!
