America’s Cup is not about the people

All that glitters is not gold: Premier Michael Dunkley has come under fire for his emphasis on bringing the America’s Cup to Bermuda (Photograph by ACEA/Gilles Martin-Raget)

Dear Sir,

My question to the people of Bermuda is, who are worse, the OBA or the UBP? Well, my answer to that question is: there is no difference.

They are the same party with a different name, the same policies, the same old ideas.

People of Bermuda, this is 2015. Why are we sitting around and allowing this Government to do what it is doing? Bermudians, it is time for us to wake up and realise what this Government is all about. They are not for the people; they are concerned about only themselves.

The America’s Cup, that is not for you and I, it’s for them and friends. All we will be doing is funding it as taxpayers.

Everything nowadays is all about the America’s Cup. That is fine, but when you are putting up $70 million to sponsor an event like that and then borrowing another $200 million on top of that, you are putting the country in bigger debt.

Why all of a sudden is everyone in Government rushing around trying to get this and that fixed up for the America’s Cup. That should have been done years ago. If it wasn’t for the America’s Cup, those buildings would be still like they were for years to come.

I had to smile the other day at what Kenny Bascome had to say in the newspaper. Mr Bascome wants to get Marginal Wharf fixed up because it will be an eyesore to the America’s Cup guest. So it’s not an eyesore to the cruse ships or hotel guests? I guess you figure we Bermudians enjoy looking at the eyesore.

Mr Bascome, you were Mayor of St George, why didn’t you tackle the problem then, if it’s such an eyesore? No, you had to wait for something like the America’s Cup to come here for this Government to react. What a shame.

Here it is that Bermudians are looking for housing, this should have been done much sooner. Government claims that it will be turning some of the buildings into two- and three-bedroom housing.

Who will be staying in them, Mr Dunkley? Will they be used for the Bermudian people or will they be used for the special guests of the Government during the Americas Cup?

Mr Dunkley claims that the America’s Cup will create jobs for Bermudians. Mr Dunkley, that’s a good one because you are looking two years down the road. Well let me tell you, Mr Dunkley, Bermudians are struggling now and people need jobs now, not in two years’ time. Fellow Bermudians, it’s time for us to take that silver spoon out of Government’s mouth and give it back to the people. It’s time for us to rise up and let this Government know enough is enough. We must do it together as one.

Can anyone tell me why this Government is renting the Rhode Island Fast Ferry for $1.5 million a year and we have fast ferries sitting at the dock just rotting away? Nothing but wasted money.

How can a Government allow companies to discriminate against workers 55 and over? Life doesn’t end at 55. It’s OK for you all because you all are receiving hefty cheques, which you don’t deserve. It’s about time you start doing things to justify your pay. But you want to keep taking from the little man.

I believe from your performance as a Government, you all should be giving some of that money back to the people because you are not earning it. The rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer.
