Wells goal not enough for Huddersfield

Second of season: Wells put his side ahead at Craven Cottage

Nahki Wells scored his second goal of the season but it still was not enough to earn Huddersfield Town their first league victory.

The Huddersfield and Bermuda striker gave the visitors a deserved lead when he broke the deadlock just past the hour mark, only for Fulham substitute Cauley Woodrow to grab a late equaliser in front of a 14,283 crowd at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

After a tame opening 45 minutes during which both teams give away possession with poor passing, the game finally came alive when Wells put Huddersfield ahead in the 63rd minute.

Harry Bunn, the Huddersfield striker, drew a couple of defenders towards him as ran at the Fulham defence before slipping the ball into the path of Wells who finished with aplomb.

Huddersfield created several chances to kill the game off after Wells put the visitors ahead as Sean Scannell, the midfielder, had a header saved by Andrew Lonergan, the Fulham goalkeeper, and then Mark Hudson, the defender, headed a corner over the crossbar. Bunn also forced Lonergan to make a save on a break.

These missed opportunities came back to haunt Huddersfield as Woodrow, the Fulham forward, volleyed home from close range in the fifth minute of stoppage time to salvage a point for the hosts.

Chris Powell, the Huddersfield manager, was disappointed with the outcome of a contest he felt his team deserved to win.

“We should have won on the balance of play,” he said. “It was almost a perfect away performance; a real dogged display when it had to be alongside some good football. That’s what you do away from home, especially in the Championship when it’s so tight and tough.”

Elsewhere in England on Saturday Reggie Lambe’s Mansfield Town were held to a 1-1 draw at home against Oxford United.

Craig Westcarr, the Mansfield striker, gave the hosts the lead just three minutes into his full debut for the club when he volleyed home a poor clearance from the edge of the box.

Mansfield then blew a golden opportunity to double their lead when Matt Green’s penalty cannoned off the bar.

Oxford came close to equalising when Alex MacDonald, the winger, hit a rasping drive against the post.

However, there would be no denying the visitors in the 59th minute when Lambe was harshly adjudged to have fouled Callum O’Dowda on the edge of the area and Kemar Roofe, the Oxford midfielder, buried the ensuing penalty kick to level the scores.

“To go toe-to-toe with one of the favourites for this league and come out of it with a point has to be pleasing,” Adam Murray, the Mansfield manager said.

“We wanted to win it of course and it should all have been over in the first 20 minutes when we might have been three up.

“But, sometimes that’s the way these things go and you end up grinding out a point.

“They are one of the big hitters to get promotion this season and we should have put it to bed early.

“In the end we had to be resilient against a very good side. We are a fit bunch, but we didn’t have that zip or energy here.

“Fortunately we have no midweek game which will give us a bit of a breather that will help the boys regenerate.”
