Triathlon trio to compete this weekend

Julia Hawley will be looking for a strong performance at the British Triathlon Federation's Under 20 Festival on Sunday.

Tyler Smith, Erica Hawley and Alex Pilgrim, Bermuda’s top junior triathletes, will be in action in Canada and the UK this weekend.

Smith is in Canada preparing to compete in the Canadian Junior Elite Series on Saturday while Hawley and Pilgrim will race in the British Triathlon Federation’s Under-20 Festival in Mallory Park, Leicestershire, England.

After his seventh place finish in Kelowna, British Columbia on August 23 in the Canadian Junior Western Championships, Smith travelled down to Victoria, British Columbia with father Aaron where he has been staying with Dave Morrison and Sue Edney and training with his coach Kelly Guest and his group of junior elite British Columbia triathletes.

Smith leaves today for Edmonton, Alberta where he will be racing in another of the Canadian Junior Elite Series races. His race gets under way at 9.30 Edmonton time (12.30 Bermuda time). Smith then returns to Bermuda before flying out again to Chicago on September 14 to compete in the 16-19 Junior Elite World Championships.

Meanwhile Erica Hawley, who was ninth in her race in Kelowna, also returned to Victoria and trained with Guest before returning to school in the UK. She has now set her sights on this weekend’s race at Mallory Park where she will compete in the 16-19 age group. Her races gets under way on Sunday at 9.30am Bermuda time. Pilgrim will race in the 12-13 year old TR3 UK inter regional championships, representing the Southwest of England, having qualified for that region in a qualifying race as the fastest qualifier. His race gets under way at 7.05am Bermuda time on Sunday.

On the run: Alex Pilgrim, competing for Bermuda overseas recentl, will be in action in Leicestershire on Sunday.
