Limerick’s Hall rewarded for his heroics

Fine form: Freddy Hall

Freddy Hall’s performances for Limerick in Ireland have not gone unnoticed, with the Bermuda goalkeeper named in a league of Ireland team of the week.

Hall helped Limerick beat St Patrick’s Athletic 3-1 at the weekend for a fifth win in six games to boost their survival hopes.

Playing in front of a large home crowd at the Markets Field, Limerick led 2-0 at the interval despite being reduced to ten men on the half-hour mark, before making it 3-0 four minutes into the second half.

Hall was finally beaten ten minutes from the end when St Patrick’s pulled a goal back from a superb free kick that found the roof of the net from 20 yards.

The 30-year-old was described as “big and commanding”, having rejuvenated Limerick since his arrival at the club.

Hall nullified the St Patrick’s threat from corners and was only denied a clean sheet by James Chambers’s free kick.

Also named in the team of the week was Hall’s Limerick team-mate Ian Turner who was named man of the match after his two goals against St Patrick’s.

Limerick are still bottom of the 12-team Premier Division after taking 13 out of a maximum 15 points from their last five matches.

Just four points separate the four teams above Limerick, who will have a wait for their next game, which will be against Bray Wanderers on September 19, before welcoming champions and league leaders Dundalk to the Markets Field.

Limerick’s fortunes have changed since Hall arrived at the club in July after suffering relegation with non-League side Telford United in the Vanarama National League in England.

However, he insists he has no regrets about joining Limerick and jumping into another relegation battle.

“I had a few options in England that I could have pursued, but I wanted to experience something different,” said Hall, who captained Bermuda in the away leg of their second-round World Cup qualifiers against Guatemala in June.

“I saw the opportunity here and just took it.”
