Wells could be back in Powell’s plans

Back in favour: Wells could find himself in the starting lineup today

Nahki Wells could return to the Huddersfield Town side for today’s home match against Bolton Wanderers, manager Chris Powell said.

Powell sprang a surprise by leaving out his leading scorer as he preferred Ishmael Miller for the midweek match at Charlton Athletic which Huddersfield won 2-1 to end six games without a victory.

Wells was one of three players to drop to the bench and Powell said it was the right decision to leave out the Bermudian international who scored 14 times last season, as he kept faith with Harry Bunn, who scored Town’s opener at the Valley.

“I thought a lot about the team and I made my decision after reviewing Charlton’s home game against Rotherham United on Saturday,” Powell said.

“I thought we needed Ishy [Miller] on the field at Charlton, and he gave their centre backs a tough time. I also wanted to start with Muzzy Carayol, because like Sean Scannell he has pace and can bring us up the pitch. And I thought Harry Bunn was excellent at Cardiff and deserved to stay in the side, so it was pleasing to see him get his goal.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Nahki Wells. He is a big player for us and he may well be back against Bolton, but I felt I had to go the way I did at Charlton.”

Beating Charlton — Powell’s former team — lifted Huddersfield to 20th in the Championship. Bolton are seventeenth after their goalless draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Huddersfield could have a new striker to provide competition for places up front with Shola Ameobi, the former Newcastle United striker, in talks with the club.

The 33-year-old, now a free agent, has trained with Chris Powell’s squad after a spell with Crystal Palace in the Premier League last season.

Another striker, James Vaughan, has been told that his contract will not be renewed at the end of the season and he is free to speak to other clubs.

Vaughan, 27, has suffered with injuries and has made just one appearance for Huddersfield this season, coming on as a sub against Brighton.
