OBA must change over foreign workers

Dear Sir,

Once again I must put pen to paper. I see we have just brought in a Mark Watkinson from HSBC Bank Malta to run HSBC Bermuda, replacing Richard Moseley.

No Bermudians available? How do we know? Position wasn’t advertised; loophole in the law. Where is the next generation of Donald Lineses, Henry Smiths?

We Bermudians spend millions of dollars every year educating our young people overseas at accredited universities and colleges only to come home to Bermuda and be second-class citizens in our own country.

Bermuda is so quick to bring in someone from overseas as CEO of a publicly trusted company when the talent is right here. You mean to tell me a Bermudian is not capable of running Belco, HSBC Bermuda, the MarketPlace or many of these insurance companies and hotels? Please.

Immigration laws must be tightened. Foreigners must be brought into Bermuda in top positions only as a last resort. Where is the register right now, Michael Fahy? And immigration doesn’t know how many Bermudians are out there between the ages of 18 and 65, what their full name and address is, work history, education, degrees, where they are working, or not working.

How can Mr Fahy or immigration protect Bermudian workers from abuse from employers if they don’t have a register? They can’t.

Mr Fahy, do your job. The technology is available to implement what I have suggested. Remember, every time you bring in someone from overseas, it tells that person that Bermudians are too stupid or lazy to do that job. Especially when there are 4,000 Bermudians out of work, it sends the wrong message.

Mr Fahy and the OBA, change your ways fast on this matter or you will pay the price at the polling station in 2017.

Remember, those 4,000 Bermudians out of work can vote; the 11,000 plus on work permits can’t.
