Simons starts in trophy defeat

Rai Simons’s Chesterfield lost 2-1 away to Rochdale in round two of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Spotland Stadium last night.

Simons, the 19-year-old Bermuda striker, started his second successive match after impressing away to Crewe Alexandra in the Sky Bet League One at the weekend.

Scott Tanser gave the home side the lead after 18 minutes before an own goal on 65 minutes by fellow defender Ashley Eastham put Chesterfield on level terms.

Lewis Alessandra struck Rochdale’s winner a minute later. Simons was substituted in the 80th minute.
